Last year, I wrote about how the papaya mealybug had invaded our garden and was killing my plants. Well, in all fairness, not just my plants, but plants belonging to our neighbors and all sorts of people around the island. Papaya mealybug is invasive and has killed entire crops all over South Asia.

The papaya mealybug is an import from Mexico, if I recall correctly, and as such, it has no natural predators here. But in Mexico, it does have a predator, a wasp. The Sri Lankan government imported that wasp around the middle of last year, and the news reports said they estimated it would take six months to a year before the wasp had spread all over the island.

That wasp isn’t in my garden yet – my plants are still affected by it. Luckily, only my lime tree died. Most other plants survived my extensive clipping, but the lime tree was so badly infected that, despite clipping infected foliage several times, it still died. Other bugs invaded and finished the job.

Meanwhile, my jasmine is still alive and kicking. Still infected, but not as badly as before. But then, it also doesn’t have even half the foliage it had just a year ago. Nevertheless, it’s healthy enough that it’s blooming, and boy, is it blooming!

Green Parrots in Flight

I’ve mentioned before that we have green parrots in our neighborhood. Heck, I’ve posted a whole bunch of rose-ringed parakeet photos here.

These parrots entertain me, and not just because they are stunning in their bright green, so bright green that they’re difficult to find when they’re staring right at me in plain sight from 12 feet away on the orchid tree that they match perfectly.

While they haven’t been visiting the now-dead orchid tree on the road or the banana plants in the next-door lot, they have been flying around, amusing themselves.

Picking Flowers

A man is picking flowers off the neighbor’s tree.

This happens often enough, either with flowers or leaves or whatever. Maybe the flowers are good for treating some kind of illness or other according to Ayurvedic tradition. Maybe the leaves will be made into a mallung or sambol. Maybe the leaves have religious significance and will be left at a temple.

A Squirrel and a Chameleon Meet…

I know, I know. The subjects of these photos, the squirrel and the chameleon, are not in focus. I’m sorry. I’m still getting used to the new camera and I’m not yet quick enough at some things.

Nevertheless, I liked the photos so much because it’s one of those things that I’ll likely never have another opportunity to photograph, unless the stars align just right and all the rest of that.

So.

A squirrel and a chameleon meet in a bar… No, wait….

A squirrel and a chameleon are in a rowboat… No, that’s not right, either.

A squirrel and a chameleon meet on a power line, both going in opposite directions. The chameleon sure doesn’t look like he’s going to budge, so what does the squirrel do?

He hangs on to the bottom of the power line, upside down, and goes around the chameleon.
