Chameleon! Maybe?

Chameleon! Maybe?

Chameleon live in the wild here. They visit us in Colombo, but here, this one is hanging on the drain chains (to drain rain from the roof) at the house in Kurunegala. They’re smaller lizards that Fahim calls chameleons, although I’m not sure if they are a proper chameleon. From what I’ve gathered so...

Lizard Crossing

It’s true, it happens fairly often. Large lizards cross the road, roam the neighborhood, wander around seeing the sights. Stop for a cup of hot chocolate with the neighbors, get caught up on the neighborhood gossip, then wander towards the nearest gutter and climb in… Similar Posts: The Lizard Walk. And The Bird. But...

Pooping Cat!

Pooping Cat!

Every single time Fahim sees this picture, he breaks out into chants of "Pooping cat! Pooping cat!" (Ah, yes, he just did it again. Fahim’s so reliable. And insane. And reliably insane. ) In reality, this is a neighborhood cat on the overhang for the lower floor of our house. He was chasing a...

Project #365 Day 66 Monkeys! And Starfruit!

In the first picture, the adult purple-faced leaf monkey, aka purple-faced langur, helps the little monkey up onto the top of the power pole. But then the little monkey decides to jump into the starfruit tree – dives right in! Then the adult monkey jumps in after the little monkey. You can see the...

Project #365 Day 63 Purple-Faced Leaf Monkey

This guy (I think…), a gray purple-faced langur monkey, visited us again. The pack of monkeys – there are five that we know of – visit us on occasion, and when they want to, they sure can move fast. Here he is, sitting on a power line just after the youngest one, about six...

Project #365 Day 53 Common Tailorbird

I’ve mentioned before that, in empty lots here, stuff grows. Yeah, cuz "stuff" is such a highly technical descriptor, right? Here we have a random flower from some random plant with a Common Tailorbird at its side, no doubt foraging for breakfast. The Common Tailorbird is so cute. Similar Posts: Project #365 Day 49...

Project #365 Day 12 Mooooo!

I heard a high-pitched whiny "Moooooo!". This is not at all unusual here. But since I’m nothing if not a cow-picture-takerer, I went out onto our balcony and snapped a picture of the wee little moo cow. And he turned the corner and went up the little road. And then I saw a bigger...

Sri Lankan cats are puny

I was out and about today, and finally I remembered to take pics of some local cats. Remember way way back to August when I talked about small cats and how the people at immigration – or was it cargo? Yeah, cargo – were amazed when they saw how big Oberon was. I can...

This country has too many cows. Way too many. Way way too many.

This country has too many cows. Way too many. Way way too many.

And I keep taking more pictures of them. What can I say? Even after more than half a year, I’m still fascinated by a country that lets cows wander the streets like cheap hookers. I’d be even more fascinated if it was, say, elephants and monkeys in an urban environment, but . . ....

More on cows. Serious cows. Or maybe very happy cows?

I’m really not sure. This is still on the way back from the acupuncturist, and there were about twelve cows inside of, oh, 100 feet on this major road. Three were grazing at one end – but at least they were at the side of the road. A little further, and traffic was stopped...
