Colombo Crows, aka House Crows (Corvus splendens) in Sri LankaColombo Crows, aka House Crows (Corvus splendens) in Sri LankaWe were visiting Fahim’s brother’s wife’s family in Colombo when I spotted these birds. Of course, everyone laughed at me for wanting to take their pictures, but that happens all the time. ;) Get used to it, yanno? :D

Then I got the story that these are Colombo Crows (Corvus splendens), also known as House Crows. Standard crows, you see, are all black. But Colombo crows aren’t. Colombo Crows have a grey body. Mostly. I’ve seen some with a brownish-grey body – or what I would call brownish-grey – that Fahim insists is still grey and still the same Colombo Crows. :P

Colombo Crows have regional variations in how dark the body is, and in Colombo, Sri Lanka, that grey is very dark indeed, dark enough to be nearly indistinguishable from black in certain light. Happily, I saw them during daylight with enough sun to distinguish the black from grey. :)
