The governor of the Indian state of Maharashtra has delayed the signing of an ordinance which bans dance bars in the city of Mumbai (Bombay).
Correspondents say the delay has given hope to more than 100,000 dance girls.
The state government wants the bars banned on the grounds that they corrupt young people and are a front for crime and prostitution.
A statement from the governor’s House said that he saw "no immediate reason" to sign the ordinance.
